Many people love the thought of owning a historical house. However, some may not want to sacrifice the modern conveniences they’ve come to expect in modern homes today. A great deal of care should be taken when modernizing an old home, as once a mistake is made, it will be difficult to reverse. So, here is a brief list of modernizing techniques to avoid when renovating historical houses:

The first thing you need to do before beginning any type of renovation work is to check your local government to see if there are any regulations in place by the district’s historical committees, regarding the type of work you can do on the house.

Many modern building materials do not go well in a historical home. For example, you may want to preserve some of the beautiful details in the home which have often been constructed with natural wood or solid material. Replacing these materials with modern ones such as plywood and plastic will be out of keeping with the look of the home and may not be as durable as the original ones.

You may want to waterproof old masonry and bricks. However, this could result in moisture being trapped and starting to deteriorate the masonry. Other modern materials like some insulation and fire retardants may also have a damaging effect on the original materials, so be careful with this.

Avoid replacing the original windows unless they can no longer be repaired. If they must be replaced, be sure to use windows that are in keeping with the rest of the building.
