With so many technological options for enhancing home security these days, we may stop thinking about the more basic ways to keep our homes secure. For example, how secure would you say your home’s front door is? The exterior doors of a home can be a very vulnerable part of the house when it comes to security. With that in mind, here are a few maintenance and security suggestions:

Perhaps the first thing you think about when with exterior door security is its lock. Ideally, you want to have a good-quality deadbolt lock. Many people also like to install a chain on their front door. While this is a good choice, it should never be a replacement for the deadbolt.

The door construction plays another key role in its ability to keep the home secure. Exterior doors should have a solid construction with a solid wood or steel core. You also need to keep the door well-maintained and ensure there is no rot, cracking, warping, or any other problem that will compromise its strength. It is much easier to break into a door that is in disrepair.

It is popular to have glass paneling in front doors nowadays, and while this looks good and allows extra light into the home, you also need to ensure that it cannot easily be smashed and broken into. It is also important that whatever lock is used for a glass paneled door, it will not be easy to open if the glass were smashed.

If you are currently preparing your 2023 home maintenance task list, why not add an inspection of your home’s exterior doors to keep the house as secure as possible?
