We are going to highlight home security and safety this month, starting with a look at your exterior doors. Although some very advanced security systems are available for the home nowadays, it is still important to check that exterior doors and windows are secure and not vulnerable to break-ins. Here are a few ways to do it:
Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when considering exterior door security is the door lock. The door should have a good-quality deadbolt lock. If the lock is a pin-tumbler type, you should also think about fitting a bump-resistant lock that would prevent an intruder from being able to get in using a bump key.
The door lock, while important, will not do much if the door is in a bad state of disrepair, which will make it easier to break into. Check that the door hasn’t started to rot, develop cracks, warp, or experience any other type of problems. The construction of the door should also be solid and have a steel or wooden core.
Many exterior doors have glass paneling – this can make them both aesthetically pleasing and permit more natural light to enter the home. If you have glass paneling in your front door, just make that the lock is positioned in a way that would be difficult to open if the glass were smashed.
Don’t let your front door be the weakest point in the home. Keep it well-maintained and locked with a deadbolt.
