If you have been told that there is termite damage on your property, you may well be worried, and rightly so, as termites can cause a great deal of destruction. But, before you spend a ton of money having the problem treated, it may be wise to get a second opinion. Why?
While many tradespeople are very honest, sadly, this is not the case with all of them, and termite inspection companies are no exception. So, it is possible that the huge termite problem you’ve been told you have is not that bad after all.
One thing that can help prevent you from being conned out of a lot of money is to have at least a basic knowledge of termites. It is pretty easy to detect the presence of termites because they form lines of mud or soil and hollow out wood along the grain. Ask the termite inspector to show you where there is evidence of termites on your property. If they point out the problem on the house itself, then this may be of concern. However, if termites are affecting some fencing or a woodpile, etc. there is no need to be too alarmed.
If you are worried you may fall victim to conman when it comes to termite inspectors, ask the opinion of other companies in the area and find out how much they charge for the same service. If it turns out that you do need to have the problem treated, be sure to have a signed contract that details how long the treatment is guaranteed.
